SANTIAGOUnemployment in Chile stood at 8.3 percent in the three-month period between March and May 2024, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) of the southern country reported today, Friday.
According to the National Employment Survey prepared by the INE, the result is explained by the increase in the workforce (3.1 percent) in the quarter, which was lower than that presented by employed persons (3.3 percent).
The sectors that contributed to the increase in the employed population were public administration, transportation and health activities.
The number of unemployed people increased by 0.5 percent in 12 months, due to the number of people seeking work for the first time (18 percent).
The INE said in its report that participation and employment rates stood at 62.2 percent and 57 percent, respectively, while the number of people outside the labor force decreased by 2.4 percent.
By gender, the unemployment rate in the reference period was 9.3 percent for women and 7.6 percent for men.
In the case of informal employment, the rate stood at 28.2 percent, which meant an increase of 0.8 percentage points in one year.
