A new X-ray of Antioquia

The House of Culture of Saint Vincent de Ferrer was the place chosen to present the Quality of Life Report 2023a document produced thanks to careful research and guided by the purpose of getting to know Antioquia better.

The result was possible thanks to the teamwork of the Corona Foundation, Comfama, Comfenalco, Grupo Argos, Uniban, Fundación Bios, Mineros, EAFIT University, the Pontifical Bolivarian University, the University of Medellín, Prisa Media and Proantioquia.

88% has increased the urban population
in Antioquia, in the last 34 years

Representatives of civil society and community organizations attended the event. The government presence was led by Andrés Julián Rendón, governor of Antioquia. Throughout the 178 pages From this report it is possible to know what the reality of Antioquia and the Eastern region is on vital issues: demography, poverty and inequality, housing, food security and nutrition, health, education, employment, economic development, and citizen security and coexistence.

Food and safety

Although poverty has generally decreased, the report makes clear that “the main warning is food insecurity, which continues to increase in all subregions. While the 29% of people live in monetary poverty, 38% of households are in moderate or severe food insecurity.”

The issue of citizen security is also one of the warnings raised by this report. Although the homicide rate reached its lowest level in 53 years, “currently the Clan del Golfo is present in at least a fraction of 53% of the municipalities; the ELN, in 26%; and the EMC, in 15%.”

25% of the economic activity of the East
is concentrated in industries.

This is related to the forced disappearance, kidnappings and mass forced displacement. Added to this is the ongoing gender violence. This report is an x-ray of Antioquia, a look into its depths, to find out where efforts should be directed.

Among the main alerts is the issue of food insecurity: the East, although it is the region with the best conditions, has
56% of households have a condition that negatively affects their diet and health.
