German Chancellor Olaf Schultz landed tonight (Tuesday) for his first visit to Israel, during which he will meet with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and President Yitzhak Herzog. Along with meetings with senior government officials, Schultz will tour Yad Vashem tomorrow – with the Chancellor accompanied by Prime Minister and Yad Vashem Chairman Danny Dayan. For Yad Vashem’s Holocaust Studies. The Chancellor will then attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the Yizkor tent, tour with a child and sign the Yad Vashem guest book in Janusz Korczak Square.

This is Schultz’s first visit to Israel since he took office as chancellor last December, and it comes at the same time as the current war in Ukraine. The visit was planned in advance even before the start of the war, but was in danger of being canceled in recent days following the Russian invasion. Despite this, Schultz insisted on coming to Israel anyway, but the visit was very short and will be spread over only one day, when after his meetings on Wednesday he will return to Germany.
