The animals in the zoo in Razgrad welcome autumn in renewed homes. After repair works, the areas where ponies, nandu birds, ibex, Vietnamese pigs, fallow deer and llamas are bred have been improved, zoo engineer Ivelin Nedelchev, head of the “Zoo” department, told BTA.
He explained that the roofs of the enclosures and the visors of the sheds that the animals live in during the colder seasons have been replaced. New combined feeders with two zones each have been built for the ponies and the shovelers. Sandboxes have also been built for the ponies and the Nandu birds, in which they take “sand baths”. According to Nedelchev, a visor will also be placed on the premises of the llamas. The play facilities in the lion cage will also be renovated, and a rock garden will be made in the area where the maned ibex is bred.
The activities are part of the gradual renovation of the premises of the residents of the zoo, which is supported by the municipality, said Deputy Mayor Zornitsa Evgenieva. She recalled that in previous periods, new aviaries were built for the birds, which are the predominant species among the inhabitants of the zoo, as well as rooms for monkeys and, before that, for lions. The Deputy Mayor noted that the fence opposite the “Huvefarma Arena” stadium will also be renewed, which will complete the complete renovation of the fence that surrounds the zoo.
The Razgrad Zoo is located in the City Park and is one of the favorite places of the city’s residents and guests. Its inhabitants enjoy interest not only from children, but also from their parents and relatives. “The place is our favorite for walking and relaxing. Here we are in the fresh air, in the cold,” said Atanas, who together with his five-year-old grandson Krum come to enjoy the animals almost every day. Merlin is also a regular visitor to the zoo with her two children. She noted that the little ones are very happy the goats and the birds.
45 mammals and nearly 100 birds of various species are kept in the zoo. Among the latest additions are the two green sea cat monkeys. Those who gather the most admiring glances are the two lions. According to Ivelin Nedelchev, there are currently no plans to expand the site and fill it with new animal species.
He appealed to all visitors not to feed the animals as it could prove dangerous to their health. “We all love animals, but they are well cared for. Most treats given to them by their children and their relatives are harmful to them, leading to various diseases and even fatal cases,” added Nedelchev.
