Hvaldimir was a real celebrity in Norway, as he was sighted in several coastal towns, where he did not shy away from contact with people.

The beluga whale named Hvaldimirfirst seen in Norwegian waters wearing a harness, which made it accused of being a supposed “spy whale” of Russia, was found dead.

According to the broadcaster NRK, the whale was found dead in Risavika Bay, in southern Norway, by a family who were fishing there, so it was later taken out of the water to be examined.

The “spy whale”, which combines the words hval – for beluga – and the first name of Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, will be examined by experts.

“Unfortunately, we found Hvaldimir floating in the sea. He passed away, but it is not clear what caused his death,” said marine biologist Sebastian Strand, adding that the beluga had no external injuries.

Hvaldimir was a real celebrity in Norway, as he was sighted in several coastal towns, where he did not shy away from contact with people, as explained by the NGO Marine Mind.

“Based on these observations, it appears that Hvaldimir arrived in Norway by crossing from Russian waters, where she is presumed to have been held captive,” Strand added.

In addition to the “spy whale” theory, there has also been speculation that Hvaldimir may have been a “therapy whale” of some sort in Russia.
