At least one person was injured as a result of the typhoon, and more than 414,000 people were forced to evacuate. In Shanghai, schools were closed and residents were asked to stay indoors.

Near the center of Typhoon Bebinca, the wind speed reached almost 42 meters per second. During the storm, more than 60,000 emergency services workers and firefighters were mobilized to provide assistance to the victims.

Authorities said the wind uprooted or uprooted more than 10,000 trees and knocked out power to at least 380 households. Four buildings were damaged. At least 53 hectares of agricultural land were flooded.

As the typhoon moved inland, it weakened but caused flooding in Jiangsu, Anhui and Zhejiang provinces.

Flights, ferries and trains were suspended in Shanghai and neighboring provinces, making travel difficult during China’s three-day Autumn Festival. Shanghai airports canceled hundreds of flights on Sunday and Monday, while authorities in Hangzhou, about 170 kilometers southwest of Shanghai, canceled more than 180 flights.

Flights at Shanghai’s airports resumed Monday afternoon as the storm receded.

Meteorologists predict that Shanghai and some neighboring provinces will receive up to 30 centimeters of rain from Monday to Wednesday.

Typhoons hit Shanghai relatively rarely. They usually reach China further south.

In early September, Typhoon Yagi hit China’s Hainan Island, killing at least 74 people in Myanmar, and dozens of people are missing in Myanmar. Four deaths were reported in Hainan, at least ten people died in Thailand and 20 in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, more than 230 people have died in Vietnam from Typhoon Yagi and the ensuing floods and landslides, and dozens more are still missing.
