Dirndl: tradition meets modern trends and makes every woman an eye-catcher!

In October it’s finally that time again – chic dirndls come out of the closet! At Oktoberfest in Munich, girls proudly show off their best traditional clothes.

But what is the story behind the Bavarian tradition: Where did the dirndl first come from?

The story of the dirndl

A dirndl is a traditional garment from Bavaria and Austria, characterized by a loose, often low-cut top and a wide skirt that sits high on the waist. A coat tied with a high-neckline completes the outfit.

The word “Dirndl” comes from Bavarian-Austrian usage. There, there is a young woman who works as a domestic servant or agricultural worker. Their work clothes were known as “Dirndl clothes” and later called “Dirndl”.

The work uniform consists of a shirt and a “Leiblgwand”, today known as a dirndl dress. They put a linen cloth on his head, which is usually made of bed linen. The designs are mostly simple and monochrome, occasionally with floral or tendril designs.

Dirndl used to be used only as work clothes. It became popular as a national dress from the end of the 19th century. At the 100th anniversary of Oktoberfest in 1910, it finally developed into the official Oktoberfest clothing for women.

The traditional dirndl includes a dirndl blouse, often complemented by a scarf and a short scarf. Dirndls come in many variations: as classic traditional dirndls, plain or patterned, made from different materials and in different lengths.

Every year there are new dirndl styles. Certain colors are especially popular or high-necked – like this year.

► Note: Bowing on a dirndl apron shows a woman’s relationship status! Be it right, left, front or back – bowing position says volumes about you.

A Bow attached to the right signals that you are married, engaged or married. Wear a bow on the left side, showing that you are single. A bow tied in the middle of the front represents virginity, while a bow tied in the back indicates that she is a widow.
