Will he run for the next presidential election or not? The question of Mamadi Doumbouya’s candidacy is still on everyone’s lips. Many people fear that the transitional President will refuse to hand over power to a civilian and will decide to stay.
Regarding Mamadi Doumbouya’s candidacy for the upcoming presidential election, there are no more illusions at the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea, UFDG. It is Cellou Dalein Diallo, president of the party, who announced it: “Mamadi Doumbouya wants to run, there is no doubt. We knew that they do not want to organize the elections, we had noted and denounced it on several occasions. We even organized demonstrations to demand the organization of elections before December 31, 2024. From the beginning, we felt that there was no will on the part of this junta that wants to seize power, perhaps definitively. The choice has become simple, because the masks have fallen. Today, they want to seize power. With or without elections, this junta wants to keep power and deprive the people of Guinea of the right to choose their leaders. » Cellou Dalein believes that the path taken by the junta is contrary to the democratic values for which Guineans are fighting: “At the UFDG, we have fought for many years for the establishment of democracy and the rule of law, for respect for human rights. We are convinced that the people of Guinea need to live in a society governed by the rules and principles of democracy and the rule of law.”
In exile for over a year, Cellou Dalein Diallo was officially expected in Guinea at the end of this month. He was to participate in the long-awaited congress of the party. A return more than expected by the activists. But, he postponed his return indefinitely. He said he was waiting for the UFDG federations to finish their congress, to set the day of the national congress: “By the end of the year, we will have perhaps finished renewing the federations. After, we will set the date of the national congress. So, we must continue the renewal in Greater Conakry. Immediately after the rains, in October, missions will leave for the Forest, then for Upper Guinea so that by the end of the year, we can have worthy federations. The mandates have been correctly renewed. Here in North America, we have 12 federations, I think we’ve made 9. In Europe too, there is the Paris federation which is being renewed, the work is progressing.”
A renewal of the party’s authorities that Ousmane Gaoual Diallo, fired from the party, contests. The government’s spokesperson minister threatens to organize its congress.
