“They eat dogs. Those who come here, they eat cats,” Donald Trump said during a debate, referring to migrants who have arrived in the United States.
The phrase made Trump’s opponent Kamala Harris laugh and became the subject of heated discussions on social media. Notably, the rumor about migrants allegedly eating domestic animals had already been debunked before the debate and turned out to be fake.
The story was started by US resident Erica Lee, who started the rumor on Facebook. In her post, she said that her friend’s daughter had lost her cat, which was allegedly spotted in a tree in front of her Haitian neighbors’ house. Lee suggested that the migrants were planning to eat the animal, comparing it to the way they butcher game. She also said that she had heard that the migrants were allegedly eating dogs, ducks, and geese in the park, citing police officers and park rangers.
Although Erica Lee later deleted her post, the message had already gone viral and was picked up by several media outlets. Trump aide J.D. Vance also mentioned the rumor in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Trump himself later addressed the topic at a national debate, where he was heard by 67 million viewers.
When the host reminded Trump that the rumor had been debunked, he insisted he had seen it “on TV.” Meanwhile, Lee explained that the story about the missing cat came to her from her friend Kimberly Newton, who in turn heard it from a distant acquaintance.
