Botafogo Secures Brazilian Championship Lead with Narrow Victory Over Corinthians

by time news

Botafogo, coached by the Portuguese Artur Jorge, consolidated its leadership in the Brazilian football championship on Saturday by defeating Corinthians 2-1 in a match of the 26th round.

On an inspired night, Argentine Thiago Almada was the standout player of the match, initiating the play that Luiz Henrique would turn into a goal in the 39th minute, and then scoring the winning goal in the 67th.

In the meantime, Corinthians managed to equalize with a penalty converted by Garro (63), after having missed another penalty in the first half – John saved Romero’s shot just before the break.

Even without Artur Jorge, who was serving a suspension, on the bench, Botafogo solidified its dominance in the Brasileirão, now totaling 53 points, four more than Fortaleza, which earlier drew against Athletico Paranaense (1-1).

Palmeiras, coached by the Portuguese Abel Ferreira, sits in third place with 47 points but faces Criciúma later today in the 26th round.

Meanwhile, Corinthians is in 18th place, in the relegation zone, with 25 points.
