The chief adviser sought this assistance when a high-powered US delegation met him on Sunday (September 15). The meeting was held in Dhaka in the morning at the State Guest House Jamuna.
In the meeting, the chief adviser said that Bangladesh was in the sea of corruption during the previous government.
He told the US delegation what challenges the government is facing now in dealing with that corruption. At this time, he sought the help of the United States to rebuild the nation, carry out important reforms and bring back the smuggled wealth.
By describing the challenges of the interim government. Yunus said his administration is moving fast to restore, reform and restart the economy. Reforms have begun in the financial sector, reforms in institutions such as the judiciary and the police have begun.
He told the US delegation that a new era has begun in Bangladesh after the student revolution. This time is very important for Bangladesh. He wants to exploit an important moment in history.
Outlining the reform initiatives undertaken by the interim government, the Chief Adviser to the US delegation said six commissions have been set up to prevent vote rigging, judiciary, police, civil administration, the country’s anti-corruption agency and constitutional amendment. They will start working soon.
The US delegation, led by US Treasury Department Assistant Secretary Brent Nieman, appreciated Professor Yunus’ leadership. Supporting his reform initiatives, US officials said they were keen to provide technical and financial support for the interim government’s reform programme.
Financial and economic reforms, investment, labor issues, Rohingya crisis and the visit of the Chief Adviser to the United Nations General Assembly to New York were also discussed.
US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu, US Assistant Secretary of State Brendan Lynch, Assistant US Trade Representative Anjali Kaur, Deputy Assistant Administrator and US Treasury Department Director Jerrod Mason represented the US at the meeting.
Chief Adviser’s Special Envoy for International Affairs Lutfe Siddiqui, Senior Secretary and Head of SDG Affairs Lamia Morshed, Foreign Secretary Md. Jasim Uddin and Secretary of Economic Relations Department. Shahriar Quader Siddiqui was present in the meeting.
