A study found that drinking 2-3 cups of coffee a day could reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome in adult women by 34%.

On the 12th, the Korea Food Communication Forum (KOFRUM) announced that the research team led by Professor Je Yu-jin of the Department of Food and Nutrition at Kyung Hee University analyzed the relationship between coffee consumption and metabolic syndrome among 14,631 adults aged 19 to 64 who participated in the 2016-2021 National Health and Nutrition Survey, and the results were as follows.

The research team evaluated the subjects’ diet, including the type and amount of coffee consumed, using a 24-hour dietary recall method.

Based on the amount of black coffee consumed per day, the participants were divided into four groups: a group that did not drink coffee, a group that drank less than one cup per day, a group that drank two to three cups per day, and a group that drank more than three cups per day, and the risk of developing metabolic syndrome was compared between the groups.

As a result, it was found that if adult women drink 2-3 cups of black coffee a day, the risk of developing metabolic syndrome can be reduced by 34%. The risk of metabolic syndrome in women who drink 2-3 cups of black coffee a day was 0.66 times that of women who do not drink coffee.

In women who drank three or more cups of black coffee a day, their blood HDL cholesterol levels, which remove waste from blood vessels, were higher, but their blood triglyceride levels were also relatively higher.

In men, no association was found between coffee consumption and metabolic syndrome.

The research team said, “The conclusion of the study is that if adult women drink 2-3 cups of black coffee a day in moderation, the risk of metabolic syndrome is lowered,” and “This may be due to the positive effects of coffee on HDL cholesterol and neutral fat.”

This study was published in the latest issue of the European Journal of Ginseng and Nutrition (EJCN).
