Meeting of Thales Alenia Space workers on Toulouse site, Wednesday September 17, 2024.

Joining Thales Alenia Space (TAS) in 1996, Guilhem Ganivet, a member of the Force Ouvrière, does not remember having experienced a reorganization of this magnitude. “This is unexpected and the situation is serious”, said this engineer, microphone in hand, in front of 700 workers gathered at the call of the association FO, CFE-CGC, CFDT, CGT, on the platform at the entrance of the Toulouse factory, Tuesday September 17. “This plan is stupid and unfair because we have established our work until the end of 2025. We are calling for a clean and simple stop and we will not give up. »

Secretary FO of the social and economic council (CSE) in Toulouse did not use the language to justify the “renewal plan” of the joint company of Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), which specializes in manufacturing satellites and of land arm. It plans, in a period from 2023 to 2025, to eliminate 1,237 jobs in Europe, including 980 positions in France.

The Toulouse site, the head office of the French department specializing in the production of telecommunications payloads, was particularly affected, with the loss of 650 jobs out of a total of 2,700 people.

Kilometers from the Pink City, 600 workers gathered at another French TAS site, in Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes). Specializing in the assembly, integration and testing of communications and observation satellites, the company is losing 330 jobs out of 1,800. “The people affected by the elimination of positions will be reinstated within the Thales group. And therefore there will be no job loss », confirmation of the administration Monde. “The goal is for the company to be profitable and competitive in the medium term in the field of communications.. »

Slump in the ordering world

Cécile Larue wasn’t sure. “The company is begging for skills”, deplres this systems engineer who came to the gathering “to see harm”. Except that in space, jobs, for the most part, are specific to long cycles. We don’t teach people in two weeks. »

In the highly competitive market for civil geostationary communications satellites, global orders are dwindling. “Before the war there were calls for contracts a year. However, for three years, there have only been ten, and no more », explains the company to justify the plan. Result: in 2022, he won six calls for loans, in 2023, none and in 2024, only one.

Added to this reason are two others, according to the group: the new generation satellites – digital -, reset in orbit, require less human power and technical problems have delayed their development. Groups put things into perspective. “We must not mix parts but keep them in separate ways », Suggests Fabrice Rialet, CFE-CGC central representative. “And, above all, we must establish a strategy and a vision in a growing market », suggested this cool and project manager.
