Aldi is removing plastic packaging from its bananas in a trial in selected stores across the North East, Yorkshire, South West, South East and the Midlands.
The UK’s fourth-biggest supermarket is replacing the traditional plastic bag with a paper web alternative, on selected lines such as the Nature’s Pick five-pack.
If successful, the change will help eliminate around 234 tonnes of plastic packaging each year.
“At Aldi, we know how important reducing plastic is for our customers, colleagues and the future of the planet,” said Luke Emery, director of plastics and packaging at Aldi.
“We are constantly reviewing the ways in which we can do this and our latest trial with bananas is another big step along that path,” he added.
The measures are the latest in a series of initiatives to reduce plastic and packaging in supermarkets.
Aldi is also introducing thinner bags for its onions and replacing the current non-recyclable packaging on its butter with an alternative paper-based wrapper that can be recycled at home.
