Germans on vacation: What’s annoying about meeting international colleagues

This time is on almost every trip. Most of the time it is in the background, out of sight. Then it slowly growls, penetrating your ears and consciousness inexorably. He listened more closely, maybe even changed briefly. Now it takes a fraction of a second until you realize that someone is speaking German.

How you act when you meet people from other countries can say a lot about you. Personally, I always find it unpleasant. And there are many reasons for that.

It starts with the fact that Germans travel a lot – everywhere. So you can’t avoid meeting them on vacation. When I’m out and about, however, I want to explore the place and the area and hear nothing about local politics, the Bundesliga or the chaos at Deutsche Bahn. But many citizens cannot avoid these subjects even on vacation, even in the most remote places.

The Germans’ endless love of travel is the next problem – because the bigger the trip, the stranger has to meet someone from home there. Unfortunately, the sophistication of German holidaymakers rarely increases with the remoteness or uniqueness of the place.

It is also annoying that you have to listen to discussions about experiences and impressions directly and in your own language – because we Germans in particular tend to do that when we travel, usually in a negative way, at least than that is my advice. Something is always too hard, too expensive or doesn’t like being at home.

It was almost amusing to see a guy in Sydney recently who announced during a museum tour that “it’s now beer-worthy at the pub!” – although the desire to visit one abroad is the next German pursuit. The fact that you can find a German brewery everywhere probably has a lot to do with the locals’ thirst for beer, and more to do with the fact that many Germans don’t want to do without local barley juice, even in Colombo or Bogotá. It would be much more fun to consciously try a Sri Lankan or Colombian beer while on vacation.

At least I am not alone with my point of view – because it is rare to meet a group of distant Germans who knew each other during their vacation and are now spending it together. France, Britain and America, meanwhile, seem to be really happy when they meet each other, they often even continue their journey together, and this relationship is not even made from practical considerations.

Germans, on the other hand, seem to avoid each other abroad unless they are already traveling, for example on a group trip. Therefore, maybe my narrow-mindedness is not for nothing, such as to appear “un-German” negatively. In view. Be polite. Through the (unintelligible) use of the local language. And all this to avoid recognition by his fellow citizens. Perhaps the best solution is always a holiday in Germany.
