Abuja: The Nigerian government is planning to buy four Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) from Bengaluru-based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Nigeria is going to be the first country to buy LCH through a soft credit arrangement, which will significantly increase its military capabilities. This is an important step in terms of international defense partnership. It also shows Nigeria’s effort to increase its air defense capabilities. Along with the initiative of the Nigerian government, this agreement also shows the strategic reach of HAL. According to the Financial Express report, Nigerian army officers have completed training for HAL’s Dhruv helicopters at the Rotary Wing Academy. Discussions are currently going on between HAL and Nigerian officials and the agreement related to it will be finalized soon. LCH is a variant of Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv. It has many modern facilities like stealth technology, armored protection system and crash-worthy landing gear.

This helicopter becomes special in the battlefield

The Light Combat Helicopter is designed to perform better in combat situations. Its design provides it maneuverability and a large operating range, making it suitable for a variety of roles such as combat rescue (CSAR), destruction of enemy air defenses (DEAD) and counter-terrorism operations. The helicopter is efficient in high-altitude and jungle environments and is also effective against slow-moving aircraft and remotely piloted vehicles. Its design integrates state-of-the-art technology, including a glass cockpit and composite airframe.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army have already integrated the LCH into their fleets. The ongoing collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and HAL is aimed at enhancing the helicopter’s weapon and operational capabilities. The LCH has undergone rigorous testing in various conditions including sea level, desert areas and the harsh environment of Siachen. It was officially declared production-ready in February 2020.

Why Nigeria showed interest in LCH

The Nigerian Army is interested in the LCH because of its firepower and anti-terrorism capabilities. Nigeria is seeking 12 twin-engine combat helicopters for its military operations. Nigeria approached several global manufacturers including HAL, Airbus and Turkey’s TAI for this. HAL’s LCH is attracting Nigeria due to its features. Apart from purchasing helicopters, HAL is also helping the Nigerian Army through training programs.
