Moroccan Sahara: EU called to follow US example (Italian mayor)

by times news cr

“The United States has led by example in recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces. This is a perfectly legitimate recognition given the history of the region and the nature of the local population’s ties to Morocco, as I saw firsthand during my visit to the Sahara,” Coppola said in a statement to the press.

The mayor of Liveri, located in the Campania region (Southern Italy), visited the southern provinces in February 2014 as part of a visit marked by the signing of a twinning pact with Dakhla, supporting Moroccan sovereignty over its Sahara.

“I welcome the gesture of the United States and I think that the European Union should do the same,” he continued.

According to Mr. Coppola, “if the EU recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over its Saharan provinces, it would send a strong signal, sweeping aside the tensions and divisions inherited from the Cold War and highlighting the prerequisites for openness that would allow us to face the 21st century with serenity.”

The Mayor of Liveri took the opportunity to assure that his city and that of Dakhla plan to continue their bilateral collaboration while developing joint projects with the participation of Italian investors, notably from the “Campania” region wishing to develop projects in the Sahara, thus taking advantage of one of the best infrastructures on the continent and the arrival of American investment funds and French, Chinese and Russian entrepreneurs in the region.

On this point, Mr. Coppola wonders “why Italy is slow to react to position itself and also take advantage of this opportunity.”
