Washington: Mars has been of increasing interest to scientists and space agencies. Scientists are constantly researching Mars. One such research has revealed surprising information. Researchers have discovered huge hidden structures beneath Mars at a place where there used to be an ancient ocean. According to the research published in Science Alert, scientists have made this discovery by combining data from space missions and advanced modeling. Bart Root of Delft University of Technology has presented the results of the research at the Europlanet Science Congress in Berlin, which gives interesting information about the mysterious interior of this planet.

Volcano is buried inside the planet

Dr. Root said, ‘These dense structures may be volcanic in origin or may be compressed material from ancient impacts.’ Researchers have identified about 20 features of different sizes near the planet’s north polar cap. There is no evidence of these features on the surface of the planet. Dr. Root said that the gravity data provides an interesting glimpse of the northern hemisphere of Mars. Researchers adopted a unique method to know the internal structure of Mars.

For this, the planet’s gravitational field was investigated by analyzing subtle deviations in the orbits of satellites. This gave information about the planet’s internal fluid. This data was combined with new findings from NASA’s InSight mission. This includes the thickness and elasticity of the Martian crust, the dynamics of the planet’s mantle and deep internal processes.

The study also revealed new information about the inside of Olympus Mons, the solar system’s largest volcano on Mars. The team discovered a huge, light structure about 1750 kilometers wide, located 1100 kilometers below the surface. It is pushing up the volcano’s interior. The planet’s interior is still experiencing movement. Although there are no active volcanoes on the Red Planet at the moment, research suggests that volcanoes have re-emerged in the Tharsis region in the past. This means that volcanism on Mars may be more active than previously thought.
