New care and treatment paths at the Pta of Triggiano at the center of the Interregional Congress of the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery between Puglia, Basilicata and Molise, scheduled for tomorrow, September 20, in Bari (at the Nicolaus Hotel)

Bari, September 19, 2024 – Streamline the diagnostic-therapeutic pathways of patients with proctological problems to avoid further overloading of large hospitals that, instead, are called upon to manage emergencies-urgencies and oncological and highly complex pathologies. This is the objective of the fast track care model proposed by the ASL of Bari, at the center of the Interregional Congress of the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery between Puglia, Basilicata and Molise, scheduled for tomorrow, September 20 in Bari (at the Nicolaus Hotel), and chaired by Dr. Ivana Giannini, surgeon of the integrated territorial facility “Fallacara” of Triggiano and Professor Marcella Rinaldi of the University of Bari. The institutional greetings will be given by the health director of the ASL, Luigi Rossi, and the director of the company’s surgical department, Michele Simone.

The focus of the training day – entitled “Fast track proctology: when, how and why” – is the “fast” and safe treatments that allow patients to be treated effectively while reducing the length of hospital stay. Dr. Ivana Giannini explains the innovative care model in detail. “The guidelines of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery on outpatient proctological surgery – she states – underline that over 90% of proctological surgical procedures can be performed safely in short times and with an economic benefit for healthcare companies, optimizing the use of resources and reducing costs and waiting lists, and with a patient satisfaction rate of over 90%, because they can quickly return to daily activities and the family environment”.

In the field of proctology, moreover, over the years there has been an evolution of the surgical approach that has become increasingly personalized. Technological innovation has also allowed the development of increasingly minimally invasive surgical techniques that are better tolerated by the patient, even in terms of post-operative pain. The pioneers of this approach were the surgeons of Florence who developed specific PDTA. A line of work also absorbed in the Triggiano facility, for which proctological pathology is treated in Day Service, or on an outpatient basis, with a view to offering the best possible service to patients.

Many topics will be addressed in the four sections of discussion and comparison between experts: from the perioperative management of the patient, to the treatment of the most frequent colorectal pathologies, such as hemorrhoids and fissures, up to sexually transmitted diseases, precancerous diseases, and anal cancer.
