It is also planned that people who have reached the age of 40 will be able to start the service. Currently, it is established that Latvian citizens aged between 18 and 40 are accepted into the professional service.

The mentioned proposals will be prepared at the initiative of the Minister of Internal Affairs. Dimitrijs Trofimovs, State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior (IeM), assured the LETA agency that such changes were already in the ministry’s plans.

According to the government’s decision today, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Justice will prepare such amendments and submit them to the government together with the draft laws related to the 2025 budget. In the justice sector, such changes could apply to those working in the Prison Administration.

The Secretary of State assured that such changes are necessary because there is a lack of people in the internal affairs services, and in addition to the existing “incomplete” state, it is necessary to ensure that people continue to work in the internal affairs services, and not, upon reaching retirement age, move to civil structures.

Trofimov also confirmed that such a regulation exists, for example, in Estonia.

Defense Minister Andris Spruds (P) also announced at the government meeting that the Ministry of Defense will prepare proposals for amendments to the law, providing that a soldier who reaches retirement age has the right to continue his service while receiving a retirement pension. At the same time, it is planned to provide an opportunity for people to join the service even after reaching the age of 40.
