The Moroccan delegation was led by the ambassador and director general of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation, Mohamed Methqal. It included in particular the Moroccan ambassador to Guinea and Sierra Leone, Isam Taïb.

The opening ceremony of this meeting was attended by the President of Liberia, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, as well as ministers and experts from the delegations of the member states of the Mano River Union countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone).

During this high-level meeting, Mr. Methqal delivered a speech on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, in which he affirmed the readiness of the Kingdom of Morocco to continue, in accordance with the High Royal Guidelines, its accompaniment and support to the Member States and the Secretariat of the MRU at the bilateral, regional and multilateral levels.

In the final joint communiqué adopted at the end of this meeting, the ministers welcomed the important role played by the Kingdom of Morocco as a strategic and historical bilateral partner of the member states of the Mano River Union and its firm and constant support for the Secretariat of this sub-regional organization.

During this meeting, the UFM delegations examined a series of political, economic, social, security and institutional issues aimed at revitalizing their Union, particularly with regard to the mobility of people and goods and the implementation of the ECOWAS institutional framework.

The meeting also addressed the issue of the pilot project of a single currency and the means of institutional strengthening of the Secretariat of the Mano River Union.

As a reminder, Morocco has been an observer member of the Mano River Union since 2002, when the Kingdom facilitated mediation between Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea to restore confidence and peace in the region, making it possible to put an end to the conflicts that hampered relations between these countries.
