Apple has stopped the rollout of its new operating system iPadOS 18. Some devices became unusable after the update.

Software updates can usually be undone if the device malfunctions. In rare cases, the updates render the device unusable and resetting it is not possible.

This is exactly what happened to some iPad Pro models with M4 processors after their owners installed the new operating system iPadOS 18, reports the IT portal “Ars Technica”.

That’s why Apple stopped distributing iPadOS 18 for these models, it continues. Apple confirmed to the magazine that it had “temporarily removed” the update to “solve an issue.”

According to “Ars Technica”, reports in Internet forums indicate that not all users of the iPad Pro with M4 CPU experienced the problem after the update. In particular, iPad owners who first installed the iPadOS 17.7 update and then tried to install iPadOS 18.0 reported the error.

The update to version 17.7 was released at the same time as iPadOS 18 and has been available for a few days. Apple is providing the update as a security patch for users who do not yet want to update to the new iPadOS.

It could be that Apple did not test the update process from iPadOS 17.7 to iPadOS 18 as thoroughly as the upgrade from version 17.6 to 18.0, according to Ars Technica. This means that Apple could have simply overlooked the error.

Apple has offered the owners affected by the problem a hardware replacement. Users who have not yet upgraded will have to wait until Apple releases a revised version of iPadOS 18. It is not known when this will happen.

Last Monday, Apple released new versions of the operating systems for Macs, iPads and iPhones, among others. We have summarized the most important new features in iOS 18 here.
