After 143 days in intensive care, actor Heinz Hoenig is back home. His wife is now taking care of him.

In the spring, actor Heinz Hoenig had to be taken to hospital. He required emergency surgery and was in a coma for a time. His esophagus was then removed in a major operation. He then spent weeks recovering in the hospital, had to be mobilized and even had to practice speaking again.

As soon as the 72-year-old’s condition has stabilized sufficiently, another operation on the aorta should be performed. But before that can happen, Heinz Hoenig can now go home.

A few weeks ago, his wife Annika Kärsten-Hoenig announced that they were planning to take the actor out of the hospital. Now, on Thursday, the time had come. An ambulance took him from Berlin to Blankenburg in the Harz Mountains, where the couple live with their two sons – three-year-old Juliano and one-year-old Jianni. The two children were staying with Annika Kärsten-Hoenig’s parents during his hospital stay. “Heinz was really happy. At first he could hardly believe that he was finally back home,” said the 39-year-old.

Back at home, Annika Kärsten-Hoenig takes over the care of her husband, as she still does not have health insurance. “That means being there for him 24 hours a day. It remains to be seen to what extent I can do that in the long term with our two small children. I do my best to do justice to each of them.” She is a trained nurse – which was the prerequisite for being discharged at home.

Due to the lack of health insurance, a donation page was set up to cover the high hospital costs. The donation target has been raised several times and is now at 500,000 euros – of which 179,400 euros have already been raised (as of September 20, 2024, 6:41 a.m.).
