Six students from a basic school in the municipality of Azambuja were stabbed by a colleague this Tuesday, with one of them in serious condition and transported to the hospital, a source from Civil Protection told the Lusa agency.

In statements to Lusa, a source from the Sub-regional Command of Emergency and Civil Protection of Lezíria do Tejo stated that the affected students—five girls and one boy—are aged between 12 and 14, and that the child who is in serious condition—taken to the hospital in Vila Franca de Xira—sustained injuries to the chest and head. The child was then redirected to Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, a hospital source told the Lusa agency, which, however, did not disclose the child’s clinical status. However, according to SIC Notícias, the minor is not at risk of life.

The incident occurred at the Escola Básica 1, 2 e 3 de Azambuja, in the Lisbon district, with the motivations still unknown.

The student who stabbed the six classmates, also 12 years old, was detained by the GNR in a classroom while waiting for the Judiciary Police (PJ) to arrive.

Six ambulances and personnel from the Azambuja Fire Department and INEM were mobilized to the scene.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro reacted to the attack, condemning it but considering it an isolated act.

“It was an isolated act and a phenomenon alien to Portuguese society, but it should reflect responsibly on all those who act in the public space,” he stated in a message posted on Twitter.

According to Lusa, the case has already been handed over to the PJ. “We will listen to the child, conduct forensic analyses at the scene, and investigate,” added a source from that police force, without providing further details on what the next steps in this case will be.
