Although the official results of the baccalaureate are published, a question is raised: is the level of Malagasy students decreasing? According to a statement from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the baccalaureate success rate for this year is only 58.86%, which represents a decrease of 1.07 points compared to the previous year when it was 59.93%.

It should be noted that despite an increase in the number of registered candidates, from 215,861 in 2023 to 218,395 in 2024, the number of successful students decreased, with 128,547 winners this year, compared to 129,365 in 2023 This gap between the increase in candidates and the decrease in success raises concerns about the quality of teaching and the challenges faced by students.

Regionally, Toamasina Province stands out with the best success rate, achieving 66.07% among its 22,015 candidates. Although Antananarivo is behind with a rate of 56.31%, it stands out for the number of winners, which was 45,297 successes out of 80,447 registered candidates. On the other hand, Antsiranana province has the lowest success rate, at 53.31%, where only 8,846 candidates out of 16,595 passed.

It should also be noted that the technical and professional baccalaureate saw a significant increase, reaching a success rate of 74.58%, compared to 69.23% in 2023. On the contrary, the general baccalaureate saw a decrease in its success rate at 58.01% , compared to 59.44% last year. In the different levels of the general handicap, the S series stands out with the best success rate of 67.23%, which is equivalent to 8,399 successes, while the A2 series is the one that attracts the largest number of registrants, with 68,630 candidates.

This year’s baccalaureate figures highlight a critical issue for education in Madagascar. If the success rate is increasing in certain areas, such as technical areas, the observed drop in general passability may indicate underlying problems. This requires special attention from educational authorities to identify the causes and take appropriate measures to improve the quality of education in the country.
