Islamabad: Pakistan, which was planning to join BRICS with the help of China, has received a big setback. The current President of BRICS, Russian Deputy PM Alexei Overchuk said in Islamabad that no consensus has been reached within BRICS on Pakistan’s application. Pakistan’s government was constantly singing praises of Russia so that it would support it. Not only this, Pakistan was hoping that China would put pressure on Russia so that India would stop opposing it and get BRICS membership. At the same time, India had made it clear that it would continue to strongly oppose Pakistan’s membership. The Russian leader had visited Pakistan. BRICS is going to have a meeting in Kazan Russia in October, in which PM Modi can also go to participate. During his visit to Pakistan, Alexei indicated that no consensus has been reached on Islamabadi’s application. He told reporters in Islamabad, “We are happy that Pakistan has applied. BRICS and SCO are friendly organisations which support each other. But at the same time there is a need to build a consensus so that those decisions can be taken. We have just seen a huge expansion of BRICS.”

China wants to play in BRICS

According to ET report, Pakistan is getting support from China but it does not come in the category of emerging economies. This is the main condition for membership or partner status of any BRICS. Pakistan’s economy is on the verge of default and it does not come in the top and emerging economy countries. Russia will decide on the partner mechanism of BRICS in the summit to be held from 22-24 October. Pakistan became a member of SCO with the help of China but the condition for joining BRICS is different.

Unlike SCO, India is a founding member of BRICS and New Delhi’s stance matters a lot in the further expansion of this organization. Last year, BRICS summit was held in South Africa in which UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia and Argentina were included in this organization. This has increased the total number of members of this group to 11. At the same time, after the elections, Argentina separated itself from this group, due to which the total number of member countries has now become 10. Actually, China is trying to increase its dominance in BRICS after SCO. For this reason, it wants to include its economic slave Pakistan in it. This is why India has strongly opposed it.
