The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism (Director Jinwoo) has decided to officially propose the establishment of an ‘International Meditation Day’ to the United Nations (UN). Director Jinwoo held a press conference at the Korean Buddhist History and Culture Memorial Hall in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 20th and announced, “I plan to visit the UN headquarters in New York, USA on the 11th of next month to officially propose that May 21st (tentative) be designated as International Meditation Day.”
Jinwoo, who is visiting the U.S. from the 5th to the 13th of next month for the traditional Buddhist cultural exchange between Korea and the U.S., will hold a traditional Korean Buddhist cultural experience event including a lantern festival, temple food, and meditation at the Korean Cultural Center in New York, and a special lecture on Zen meditation at Yale University. Before this, the Jogye Order will hold the ‘International Zen Meditation Conference’ from the 27th of this month to the 1st of next month in the Gwanghwamun area of Seoul and major temples across the country. The International Zen Meditation Conference, consisting of an eve-event (27th), opening ceremony (28th), and international conference (October 1st), will be attended by overseas meditation experts such as Roshi Joan Halifax, Thupten Jinpa, Chad Meng Than, Poperus, and Jigme Rinpoche.
Jinwoo said, “Many people are skeptical about the effectiveness of meditation, but if you just meditate for five minutes, you can have the amazing experience of your emotions being controlled.” He added, “I hope that more people will find peace of mind and be happy through the International Zen Meditation Conference.”
