Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub have set a record for the longest stay on the International Space Station (ISS) within a single mission, the Associated Press reported, citing the Russian space agency.
Roscosmos said Kononenko and Chubb beat the previous record of 370 days, 21 hours, 22 minutes and 16 seconds, set in September 2023 by cosmonauts Sergei Prokopiev and Dmitry Petelin and NASA astronaut Francisco “Frank” Rubio.
Nikolai Chub and Oleg Kononenko will add a few days to their total before their scheduled return to Earth on Monday. Thus, the total duration of their stay will be 374 days. The two astronauts arrived at the ISS in September last year.
The 59-year-old Kononenko also holds other records, including the longest cumulative time spent in space – 1,110 days from five missions by the time he lands in Kazakhstan next week, BTA writes.
The record for the longest stay in space belongs to the Russian Valery Polyakov, who in 1994-1995 spent 437 days, 17 hours, 58 minutes and 17 seconds at the Mir station. He was followed by his compatriot Sergey Avdeev with 379 days, 14 hours, 51 minutes and 10 seconds in 1998-1999.
