Chungju City opened its first overseas Taekkyeon training center in Gdansk, Poland. Chungju City announced on the 19th that it dispatched Taekkyeon overseas promotion ambassador Seungjin Byun (53) to Gdansk, Poland in September 2019, and after about four years of continuous local education and promotion activities, it achieved the great feat of opening its first Taekkyeon overseas training center in Gdansk, Poland in September of this year.

The Taekkyeon globalization project is one that Chungju Mayor Cho Gil-hyung has been continuously promoting since the beginning of his term, and the opening of the Taekkyeon Overseas Training Center in Gdansk, Poland is the result of Chungju City’s active and continuous efforts to globalize Taekkyeon, such as holding the World Taekkyeon Competition every year and sending overseas promotional ambassadors.

The Gdansk Overseas Taekkyeon Training Center in Poland was established in a building (98㎡) owned by the city of Gdansk with active support from the city of Gdansk based on the friendly cultural exchange relationship between the two cities, and was remodeled with the voluntary participation of local takkyeon practitioners.

The opening ceremony will be held on the 23rd at the Gdansk Taekkyeon Overseas Training Center, with Mayor Cho Gil-hyung, Gdansk city officials, and local Taekkyeon people in attendance.

Mayor Cho Gil-hyung plans to visit Poland on the 21st for 5 nights and 7 days to celebrate the opening of Gdansk’s first overseas taekkyeon training center in line with the opening schedule and to promote taekkyeon in Europe and expand cultural exchange cooperation between the two cities.

A Cheongju City official said, “This visit is also a response to the visit of Gdansk Mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz to Chungju City in August last year, who invited the mayor of Chungju to Gdansk.”

During the visit, the Poland Open International Taekkyeon Competition, with approximately 60 participants from five countries, is scheduled to be held, so this visit is expected to have an active promotional effect for the globalization of Taekkyeon as well as for Chungju City.

The Gdansk Taekkyeon Training Center in Poland will be used for Taekkyeon classes, training of Taekkyeon leaders in Europe, and Taekkyeon experience classes in the future, and in the long term, it will be used as a place for Korean traditional culture exchange.

A Chungju City official said, “We have put a lot of effort into globalizing taekkyeon, and we are very happy to see the fruits of our labor with the opening of the first overseas taekkyeon training center in Gdansk,” and added, “We would like to thank the Gdansk City officials and Ambassador Byeon Seung-jin for their efforts.”

He also said, “Mayor Cho Gil-hyung’s visit to Gdansk this time will be an important opportunity to promote the cultural value and excellence of taekkyeon not only in Poland but also in the European region,” and “We will continue to promote projects to globalize taekkyeon so that taekkyeon training centers can be established all over the world.”
