Regarding the decrease in seismic activity off the coast of Sonsonate, following the 5.7 magnitude earthquake on the night of September 14, the Ministry of Environment’s Observatory reports that there is a low probability that earthquakes will continue to occur in the area, with magnitudes between 2.5 and 5.0.

The institution detailed that, from 3:21 pm on September 13, until this September 18 at 10:00 am, a total of 73 earthquakes have occurred in the area, of which 24 have been reported as felt by the population.

Based on the characteristics of the recorded signals, the origin of this seismic activity is attributed to the subduction process of the Cocos and Caribbean tectonic plates, they reported.

According to the aftershock forecast, there is a low probability of continued seismic events in the area, with magnitudes between 2.5 and 5.0, during the next week. Although the probability of an earthquake of similar or greater magnitude than the main event is low, its occurrence cannot be completely ruled out.

The institution will continue to monitor seismic activity to inform the population about its evolution. It is recommended to follow the instructions issued by the Civil Protection authorities and not pay attention to rumors or unofficial information about this situation.
