Schalke 04 fans were able to celebrate three times in the first half on Friday. But the third goal was only seen by the spectators in the stadium.

A power outage in Schalke’s Veltins Arena led to a brief interruption in play. The floodlights in the stadium also failed in the middle of Schalke’s second division match against Darmstadt 98 with the score at 2:0. The problem: fans watching on their TVs at home also saw nothing but black screens. And while the game continued in the stadium, Sky viewers had to wait a little longer.

They missed the Schalke 3-0 goal by Ron Schallenberg in the 38th minute in the live picture. Just like Hansi Küpper, who commented on the conference for Sky from the studio. “I had our reporter in the stadium describe the goal to me on the phone,” explained Küpper. “They feel the same way at home as I do,” added the 63-year-old.

Even at halftime, Sky was unable to show the goal in the replay, but tried to do so later. What Sky viewers did not miss was Darmstadt’s equaliser to make it 1:3 shortly before halftime. The Lilies’ penalty was shown live.

Things got strange shortly after the break. The power went out again – and another goal was scored shortly afterwards. This time for Darmstadt. Hansi Küpper didn’t see the goal this time either. “I’ve been in the business for over 30 years. I’ve never experienced anything like this,” he said with humor.

Küpper has been commentating on German football matches since the late 1980s and has worked for ARD, Premiere and Sat1. During the 2024 European Football Championship, he also worked as a columnist for t-online.
