Following the launch of the new iPhone models, we can finally make it official that Apple has started using a new system that simplifies battery replacement but only on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus while on the two Pro models the old method based on adhesive glue continues to persist.
We can access this information directly from repair manuals that Apple just released for iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro e iPhone 16 Pro Max. These manuals provide technical instructions on how to replace batteries and are intended for “individual technicians” who have the “knowledge, experience, and tools” necessary to repair electronic devices.
Apple has also published support documents regarding the tools required for various repairs. While tools for the iPhone 16 are not yet available on Apple’s Self Service Repair site, they are likely to be added soon.
Compared to previous models, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are easier to repair. Apple uses a battery removal process based on electricity, and the steps to access and replace the battery are described in a separate support document. According to the instructions, All you need is a 9-volt battery and some clips to apply to the iPhone 16 battery to remove the adhesive that holds it in place.
In the models iPhone 16 Pro e Pro Max Instead, Apple still uses standard adhesive tabs that must be carefully pulled and rolled over a wire to be able to disconnect the battery.
Apple’s instructions for all battery repairs include the use of expensive equipment, such as a battery press, required to properly install a replacement battery. The cost of the original tools and parts makes authorizing the repair nearly as expensive as taking the device to an Apple Service Center or authorized service provider. As such, these manuals are primarily intended for independent repair shops rather than individual consumers.
This year, Apple introduced additional changes to iPhone 16 models to improve repairability, including in-device setup for the Face ID camera, repairable LiDAR Scanner, and support for replacing TrueDepth camera modules between iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models.
In addition to providing repair instructions, Apple’s manuals offer a look inside the new iPhone’s build that we typically only see during device teardowns. For example, the iPhone 16 Pro features a metal battery cover, a change introduced for thermal reasonsand both Pro models have a new cooling structure which improves the heat dissipation.
