An analysis of the events surrounding the pager operation against Hezbollah highlights its importance as a key element in preventing an escalation of the conflict with Iran and the terrorist organization. The Times of Israel editor David Horowitz notes that the explosions of thousands of Hezbollah pagers in Lebanon and Syria on Tuesday were an impressive feat of Israeli intelligence, technology and organization. The event stands out against the backdrop of the tragic events of October 7, when Hamas launched a massive incursion into Israel that included killings, kidnappings and violence.

The operation to blow up the pagers, although not officially acknowledged by Israel, looked like the first step in a major ground offensive, according to Horowitz. The goal of the operation was to weaken Hezbollah, disrupt its communications and logistics, thereby creating the conditions for further strengthening of security on Israel’s northern borders. An important aspect was also the possible return of thousands of Israelis who fled their homes almost a year ago because of the threat.

Horowitz also points out that the pager explosions were not only a physical blow to Hezbollah, but also a psychological one. Suspicions arose within the organization that their devices could be used as “Trojan horses,” which led them to decide to blow up the pagers before a full-scale war began.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has previously stressed that Israel is under attack from multiple directions, including Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, Iran and countries in the region such as Yemen and Iraq. This has been confirmed in recent days, as tensions have increased on the northern borders and Israel faces new challenges in Judea and Samaria and Gaza. Missile and drone attacks have also increased from Iranian-backed forces in Iraq and Yemen.

Horowitz also mentioned the strategic crossroads Israel finds itself at. One possible scenario involves reaching a ceasefire in Gaza and stabilizing the north, which could facilitate a regional alliance with Saudi Arabia to counter Iran. At the same time, there is a risk of escalation, in which Israel could find itself embroiled in more active fighting on multiple fronts.

Despite the success of the pager operation, Horowitz points out that Israel did not seize the moment to immediately invade Lebanon or launch airstrikes against key Hezbollah targets. The situation remains uncertain at this point, and further action will depend on how the parties exploit the situation.

Earlier, Cursor reported on a powerful strike against terrorists in Rafah.

The operation was made possible by intelligence received from the Shin Bet and Aman.
