The Certified Technician Course in Sustainable Agriculture, designed to train technicians specialized in agricultural sustainability, is a direct response to the current challenges facing agriculture globally, from food security to climate change.

The Certified Technician Course in Sustainable Agriculture, which is part of the “Gruma Sustainability Project: Promoting Sustainable Agri-Food Systems in Intensive Production Schemes”, is aimed at building a model capable of measuring the degree of sustainability in the production of white corn, with a particular focus on the agricultural areas of Sonora and Sinaloa.

The goal is to conclude by June 2025 with a solid framework that not only defines what sustainability is in these contexts, but also identifies areas of opportunity and encourages the adoption of more sustainable agricultural practices for national farmers.

The joint project between Gruma and CIMMYT is carried out in three lines of action:

  • The first focuses on the alignment of CIMMYT’s sustainability principles guide with Gruma’s supplier system, which seeks to develop levels of sustainability tailored to the agroecological and socioeconomic particularities of the regions involved (in this case Sonora and Sinaloa).
  • The second focuses on identifying technical agricultural areas that present opportunities to achieve sustainability in the planting of white corn.
  • The third line is aimed at developing farmers’ capacities to implement sustainable agricultural practices in the planting of white corn for human consumption.

Participants in the course will not only receive theoretical training, but will also benefit from a practical approach that will allow them to adapt and disseminate technologies based on regenerative agriculture, essential to meet current agroclimatic challenges and market demands for healthy foods.
