You are in Geumgwan Gaya in the mid-6th century. You could be an envoy from Goguryeo, a Chinese Liang Dynasty official, or an envoy from India, the country of King Suro’s wife, Heo Hwang-ok. You are dressed appropriately. Now, if you pass through the ‘Time Gate’, you will travel back in time to Gimhae, Gyeongnam, about 1,500 years in the future. You can see how Geumgwan Gaya, where you were, has changed by examining the relics of that time.

We start from the Bonghwang-dong site, which contains relics that give us an idea of the life in this area from the 1st to 4th centuries, including a shell mound. We head to the Daeseong-dong tumuli group along the Haebancheon River, which used to be part of Gimhae Bay but has now been turned into a river.

The wife of King Guhyeong, known as the last king of Geumgwan Gaya, beckons us to come from the top of the hill. It is a hilly area about 280m long, 20m high, and 50m wide. It is a place where, through 10 excavations, we have found nearly 150 old tombs on a gentle slope. There are three gold boxes wrapped in red cloth here. What are the three ‘treasures’ inside them?

After confirming the treasure, you will attend the banquet prepared by the last queen of Gaya, the hometown of Ureuk, and enjoy the elegant dance and performance of the Choi Seon-hui Gaya Dance Troupe and the Gimhae City Gayageum Ensemble. If you are well treated, you will finish the time travel schedule by listening to the story of Gaya’s last day at the nearby Suro Royal Tomb.

It is not a short play. It is a story about the citizen participation event, “Bring the Gaya Delegation!”, which was held to celebrate the opening of the World Heritage Festival, hosted by the National Heritage Administration (Director Choi Eung-cheon) and organized by the National Heritage Promotion Agency (Director Choi Young-chang).

This event was planned to promote the 5th World Heritage Festival this year and to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the Gaya Tumuli being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It will be held from the 21st to the 24th for 20 citizens every day for 90 minutes from 2 PM in the Daeseong-dong Tumuli area in Gimhae. The event is rich in content and the performances are of a high standard.

Some point out that it is unfortunate that such a high-quality program lasts only four days for some citizens. There is also an outlook that if the National Heritage Promotion Agency and the relevant local governments put their heads together to come up with ideas, it could develop into an annual event that can be participated in by more people from home and abroad. An official from the National Heritage Promotion Agency said on the 20th, “There are restrictions on the event schedule and target due to the selection process for the local government to host the festival and budget constraints,” but added, “We will proactively review ways to expand the scope and duration of the participants.”

You can have an experience that will not disappoint you if you only pay the 20,000 won participation fee and transportation to and from Gimhae. You can apply for participation at Interpark Ticket. It is first-come, first-served, and the event on the 22nd is sold out as of 5 p.m. on the 21st.

The World Heritage Festival is held to reflect on the value and meaning of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Korea. Local governments with World Heritage sites have prepared programs such as performances, experiences, and exhibitions with partial government support and are ready to welcome guests.

This year, the World Heritage Festival will begin at the Goryeong Jisan-dong Ancient Tombs in Gyeongbuk Province on the 23rd (until October 6th), then at the Baekje Historic Areas in Buyeo and Iksan in Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do Province from the 27th to October 17th, at Seonamsa Temple and Suncheon Tidal Flats in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do Province in October, and at Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes from the 11th to the 22nd of the same month.

The Jisan-dong Ancient Tombs Festival is themed as ‘The Forgotten Gaya Civilization, Remembered as the Gaya Ancient Tombs’ and features outdoor mystery games, a nighttime light show, and more. The Baekje Historic Areas theme is ‘Exploring the Value of Baekje World Heritage’. At Seonamsa Temple in Suncheon, temple food is offered and a mountain temple camping experience is held where you can immerse yourself in the world of Zen meditation. An ‘eco tour’ is offered at the tidal flats. Walking tours and cave exploration are popular at Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Cave. The ‘Starlight Hiking Night Tour’ held at Hallasan Mountain and Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak also attracts people who want to catch a glimpse of history.
