Ravichandran Ashwin
The achievement is not very big. But unique. A unique achievement of multiple centuries and multiple fifers in one field.
India’s Ravichandran Ashwin scored a century against Bangladesh in Cheep on Thursday (September 19). He had previously scored a century against England at this ground. That is in 2021. Ashwin scored his second century in his fifth Test at this ground in Chennai. He has four previous bowling feats. Two draws each against Australia and England.
Not many players hold the record for more than one fifer and century in a particular field. Something only four have accomplished before. It was Ian Botham at Leeds, Chris Crane at Eden Park, Kapil Dev at Chennai and Sir Gary Sobers at Headingley. Ashwin is sure to be excited to join this elite club.
Personal achievements lead to personal records. But what Ashwin did today in Chennai has saved India’s pride. India were only 144 when Lokesh Rahul was dismissed as the sixth batsman. Ashwin came to the crease at that time. From there, Ashwin picked up a century on the way to an unbroken partnership of 195 runs with Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket. India’s score ended the day at 339. Which is definitely uncomfortable for Bangladesh.
Chennai is the home ground for Tamil Nadu’s son Ashwin. Ashwin was happy to play such a heroic innings at his home ground. In an interview given to Production after the match, Ashwin said, ‘It is definitely a pleasure to be able to play in front of my home crowd. This field is full of love. Ravi Shastri was our coach the last time we scored a century. It’s something really special. I enjoyed batting a lot. Jadeja has helped a lot. At one point I was quite tired. I was sweating a lot. Jadeja took over the responsibility at that time. He is really a reliable batsman for us. After going to the crease, he said, we don’t need to take three runs from two runs. Increase the innings with time. This is it.’
