Weak banks seek quick liquidity support

During the previous government, there was a liquidity crisis in the banking sector due to various irregularities, anonymous loans, looting in the name of loans, loan defaults. The interim government has initiated reforms in the banking sector. The central bank has re-constituted the board of directors of some banks. A meeting of Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) was held on Wednesday (September 18) with Bangladesh Bank. In the meeting, the managing directors of weak banks demanded immediate liquidity assistance from the governor.

Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and Spokesperson Husnay Ara Shikha said that in the meeting, weak banks seeking liquidity support said that Bangladesh Bank’s decision to provide liquidity support should be implemented as soon as possible.

He said, in the meeting, separate guidelines for Islamic banks and a separate department in Bangladesh Bank were also demanded. In this regard, the Governor of the Central Bank did not make any comment. In addition, it was demanded that the central bank take care of the salaries and allowances of the MDs and employees and leave it to the banks. In the meeting of Central Bank and BAB, it has been requested to add Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) and Association of Bankers Bangladesh Limited (ABB) to the policy of Bangladesh Bank.
