Endocrinologist Dr. Ilya Barsukov explained what causes diabetes, what its symptoms are and how it can be prevented.

According to him, diabetes is divided into two types, type 1 and type 2, and their prevalence is 10 and 90 percent respectively. That is, type 2 is the most prevalent.
He points out that sugar, especially if it is not very high, does not show any symptoms, which leads to complications that become difficult to deal with later.
“Type 1 diabetes is practically impossible to prevent, because it is an autoimmune disease that occurs when immune cells attack the pancreas, which secretes insulin. It can affect people at any age, but it most often occurs in childhood and adolescence,” he says.
As for the second type of diabetes, it is often diagnosed in the second half of a person’s life and its main predispositions are obesity and genetic predisposition, so anyone who has relatives who have had or are suffering from diabetes must be careful and control their weight.
According to him, the simplest way to control weight is to measure the waist circumference. If it is larger than 80 cm for women and larger than 94 cm for men, you should follow a special diet, exercise and consult a specialist doctor.
He points out that pancreatitis and damage caused by surgery, as well as smoking and alcohol, can cause diabetes. Therefore, personal health should be taken care of because diabetes can cause death as a result of complications or as a result of not being treated. He points out that not treating the disease greatly increases the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke.
To prevent diabetes, the specialist recommends the necessity of conducting the necessary examinations annually and paying attention to nutrition and exercising, because scientists have discovered that the incidence of type 2 diabetes among people who follow a sedentary lifestyle is 46 percent higher than among active people.
“Everyone over the age of 45 should have their blood sugar checked annually,” he says. “This includes everyone, regardless of their weight. This also includes people who were overweight or obese in their younger years.”
