In the afternoon, the Plovdiv District Court will rule on the prosecutor’s request for the permanent detention of those arrested with a large amount of the dangerous radioactive element americium. During a joint operation of several special services, a total of 80 americium tiles were discovered a few days ago at four addresses in Plovdiv.
Two people were initially detained, and yesterday it became clear that a third person was also arrested.
Interior Minister Atanas Ilkov announced that there were no new discovered quantities of the radioactive element, and the operation prevented a deal with the found quantities.
“The moment we received information that they possessed and stored such a dangerous substance, they were continuously under our control, so there was no way we could allow from the amount that we detained, a part of it would be exported and realized somewhere else direction,” the minister said. However, he declined to comment on whether the men caught were caught red-handed:
“I would not allow myself to comment on such facts and circumstances, because we do not have permission from the supervising prosecutor and we should not put our further actions at risk,” explained Atanas Ilkov.
