The Democratic Party of Korea’s largest pro-Myung (pro-Lee Jae-myung) organization, the Democratic Party of Korea’s National Innovation Conference (Innovation Conference), held a temporary joint meeting in the nature of a general meeting of lawmakers on the 21st and discussed organizational transformation and system reform.

The Innovation Council held a ‘temporary Innovation Joint Meeting’ at the National Assembly Members’ Hall that afternoon. Kang Wi-won, the standing representative of the Innovation Council, served as the chair of the general meeting that day, and members including Supreme Council member Jeon Hyeon-hee, Kang Seon-woo, Kim Moon-soo, Kim Woo-young, Kim Dong-ah, Ahn Tae-joon, Yang Moon-seok, and Lee Jae-gang took their places.

In his opening remarks, former Supreme Council member said, “I greatly respect the spirit of the Democratic Innovation Conference and believe that it is a voice that our Democratic Party truly needs,” adding, “The voice of reform and innovation will play an important role in making the Democratic Party bigger and a ruling party.”

Former Supreme Council member, referring to the prosecution’s request for a two-year prison sentence for Representative Lee Jae-myung on the previous day (20th), said, “I really don’t understand how saying ‘I didn’t know about Kim Moon-ki’ when I was mayor of Seongnam City can be considered a violation of the election law.” He added, “In cases of violations of the election law, most cases require a fine, but requesting a two-year prison sentence is political retaliation and political suppression by the political prosecution.”

Rep. Kim Woo-young, who previously served as the standing representative of the Innovation Council, emphasized, “Now that we have entered the third term of the Innovation Council, let’s create a Democratic Party that will be able to change the government in the Lee Jae-myung era.”

The Innovation Council shared information about the organizational transformation and system reorganization with the Innovation Council members inside and outside the National Assembly at this joint meeting. On this day, the Innovation Council discussed the following: △Organizational transformation and system reorganization △Revision of the Articles of Association △Approval of the new Executive Committee and policy tasks △Resolution to support the by-election.

Regarding the organizational transformation and system reform, Representative Kang Sang-im said, “The internal and external demands being made to the Innovation Council are now how to make the Innovation Council a broader organization that works together with the people on the path to taking power after the general election, and how to properly establish the framework and muscles of the national organization by reaching deeper into all 226 cities and counties.”

He continued, “We will discuss internally at least once a month, but once in the National Assembly, each policy task committee will hold symposiums or discussion forums about twice a year to launch at least about 20 policy task committees.” He added, “We plan to push forward with publishing the policy contents as a white paper at the end of the year so that it can be delivered to the party and reflected in the presidential election pledges.”

At the end of the Innovation Joint Meeting that day, Rep. Kang Seon-woo was elected as the new standing representative to replace Standing Representative Kang Wi-won, who had expressed his intention to resign.

The Innovation Party has newly elected five standing representatives, including Rep. Kang Seon-woo, Heo Tae-jeong, Lee Young-soo, Yoo Dong-cheol, and Bang Yong-seung. Of the five, Rep. Kang is the only incumbent.

Former Standing Representative Kang, who stepped down from his position as standing representative, will take overall responsibility for the by-elections in October and plans to focus on preparing for local elections and supporting policy development rather than strengthening party membership in the future.
