Domestic tourism in Colombia faces a significant challenge, evidenced by a drastic 24.9% drop in the number of travelers during the second quarter of 2024, compared to the same period last year. According to data from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane), only 1.42 million people engaged in domestic tourism, a notable decline compared to the 1.9 million who traveled within the country in 2023. This decline raises serious concerns for the sector, which was already suffering the consequences of the pandemic.

Tourism associations, such as the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (ANATO), have pointed out that the lack of economic resources and the growing insecurity on the country’s roads are influencing the decision of Colombians not to travel. The perception of an unsafe environment, with reports of blockades and situations of violence, has led many to opt for safer alternatives, which in turn negatively impacts local tourism activity.

José Duarte, president of the Colombian Hotel and Tourism Association (Cotelco), highlighted that hotel occupancy has dropped to 55.45% so far this year. This decline has been widespread, affecting 19 of the 21 main departments measured by Cotelco. Among the hardest hit are Cauca, with a decrease of 14.58%, Casanare with 10.8% and Huila with 9.2%. These figures reflect the urgent need for a strategy to revitalize domestic tourism.

Another complicating factor is the growth of tourist accommodation, which has seen a 480% increase in supply over the past two years. These options, which do not apply the 19% VAT currently in force for hotels, have become attractive to travellers, further affecting occupancy in traditional establishments. Hoteliers have called for a balance in regulations to make competition fairer.
