(ANSA) – TEHRAN, SEPTEMBER 22 – At least 30 people have died in an explosion at a coal mine in Iran, state media reported. The governor general of South Khorasan province, Javad Ghanaat, said that following the explosion in blocks B and C of the Madanjou coal mine in Tabas, 22 miners were trapped in block C. Several rescue teams are trying to save them by creating an opening in the tunnel, where a high concentration of methane gas has been detected. Ghanaat said that rescue work in block B has been completed, and of the 47 workers who were present, 30 have died and 17 have been injured. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, before his departure for New York, where he will participate in the 79th United Nations General Assembly, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the accident.
