The regulatory body Bangladesh Securities Exchange Commission (BSEC) has sought cooperation from the World Bank to improve the surveillance systems of the capital market to world standards.

Khandkar Rashed Maqsood, the new chairman of BSEC, said these things in a press conference after a meeting with the World Bank delegation at Agargaon Securities Commission building on Sunday (September 22). Earlier, both sides held a meeting for about one and a half hours in the morning. The World Bank delegation was led by Neeraj Verma, Long Term Financing Practice Manager of the World Bank Group, Salt Bango, Senior Financial Sector Specialist, Mrs. Sadia Afrin, Financial Sector Consultant (Virtually), Sophie Dong, Financial Sector Specialist and Solaiman, Senior Operations Officer of IFC.

BSEC Chairman Khandaker Rashed Maqsood said, we have discussed some specific issues today. There was a discussion about where we can get technical assistance from the World Bank. We emphasize surveillance first. In particular, we discussed how we can improve the surveillance team we have. Besides, we discussed governance.

In the press conference, BSEC Commissioner Farzana Lalarukh said, We have emphasized on surveillance and governance. We are dealing with very weak surveillance. Which is a software installed in 2012. We need to work on updating it soon. It didn’t even update after installation. Trying to make it world class very fast. I have sought the help of the World Bank for this. I have asked the World Bank for help in everything including technical. Governance we want to start with us. We will ensure accountability first.
