Heavy rainfall in Italy is causing flooding in a short amount of time.

After the storm system “Boris” caused severe weather in Central and Eastern Europe, its remnants have moved to Italy in recent days, bringing heavy rainfall. The regions of Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, and Marche are particularly affected. Just a year and a half ago, Emilia-Romagna was also hit by severe downpours.

In Emilia-Romagna, over 300 mm of rain was measured in some areas within 48 hours. In Rimini on the Adriatic coast, approximately 200 mm of rain fell in 48 hours, more than double the amount of rain that normally falls in the entire month of September. In Bologna, the capital of Emilia-Romagna, around 100 mm was recorded, which is about one and a half times the monthly average.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen promises EU assistance for regions affected by severe weather. Funding from existing EU funds will be utilized for this purpose. She stated that it would be possible to initially make 10 billion euros available from so-called cohesion funds at a visit in Wroclaw.

These funds are one of the largest items in the EU’s budget. The cohesion funds are primarily intended to help economically disadvantaged regions grow and bridge economic and social disparities.

The low pressure swirled over the still very warm Adriatic Sea. The warm seawater introduces a lot of moisture into the air. Rainfall is expected to decrease by Friday.
