Tel Aviv: Hezbollah launched a major attack on northern Israel on Friday. Hezbollah fired more than 140 rockets. Ibrahim Aqeel is the second in command in Hezbollah, who reports directly to Chief Hassan Nasrallah. Ibrahim Aqeel was a bounty of $ 7 million (Rs 58 crores) in the two Beirut truck bombings of 1983. More than 300 people were killed in the bomb blasts at the US Embassy and the US Marine Barracks. According to the report, an airstrike was carried out in the southern part of Beirut during a meeting of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan unit, in which Aqeel was killed. Aqeel is also known as Tahseen and Abdelkader. He is the second member of Hezbollah’s top military body, the Jihad Council, to be killed in the past two months. In July, Fuad Shukr was also killed by Israel in a targeted attack in the same area.
Iran was behind the commander
Like Shukar, Aqeel was a top commander in Hezbollah, the group formed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in the 1980s to fight Lebanese and Israeli forces. According to a security source, he was born in a village in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley around 1960. Before joining Hezbollah, he joined the Lebanese political movement Amal.
America had announced a reward
The US accused him of a role in the 1983 Beirut truck bombing of the US embassy, killing 63 people. Six months later, 241 people were killed at a US Marine barracks. The US accused him of directing the kidnapping of American and German hostages in Lebanon. He was listed as a global terrorist in 2019. A bounty of $7 million was announced on his head.
In 2022, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said that Hezbollah had no role in the bombing of the US Marine barracks in the 1980s. Ibrahim Aqeel helped transform Hezbollah from a small group into Lebanon’s most powerful political organization.
