New Delhi : Nearly 97.7% of all cases of atrocities against Scheduled Castes (SCs) in 2022 were registered in 13 states. Of these, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of such crimes. According to a new government report under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, most atrocities against STs were also concentrated in these 13 states, where 98.91% of all cases were reported in 2022. Out of 498 districts in 14 states, only 194 had special courts set up to expedite the trial of these cases.A total of 51,656 cases were registered in 2022 for atrocities against SC

  • 12,287 cases from UP, this is 23.78% of the total cases
  • 8,651 cases in Rajasthan, 16.75% of total cases
  • 7,732 cases in Madhya Pradesh, 14.97% of total cases
  • 6,799 cases in Bihar, 13.16% of total cases
  • 3,576 cases in Odisha, 6.93% of total cases
  • 2,706 cases in Maharashtra, 5.24% of total cases
  • These 6 states account for nearly 81% of the total cases

The report said that out of the total cases (52,866) registered under the Indian Penal Code as well as the SC/ST Act during the year 2022, 97.7% (51,656) cases are in 13 states.

Most cases of atrocities against ST are in 13 states

  • 9,735 cases registered under ST Act in 2022
  • 2,979 Most cases in MP, this is 30.61%
  • 2,498 cases in Rajasthan, this is 25.66%
  • 773 cases in Odisha, this is 7.94%
  • Maharashtra with 691 cases (7.10%) and Andhra Pradesh with 499 cases (5.13%) are also included.

Charge sheets were filed in 60.38% of SC cases

  • 14.78% ended with a final report due to reasons such as false claims or lack of evidence
  • Investigation in 17,166 cases pending till the end of 2022
  • 2,702 cases related to atrocities on ST are still under investigation
