There are medicines for hereditary hair loss. However, you have to take them long-term – and that costs money.
Up to 70 percent of men lose their hair sooner or later. And many of them find the bald head annoying or stressful. But there are medicines that can slow down hair loss. There are essentially three different active ingredients that can be used. Minoxidil and alfatradiol are available over the counter in pharmacies, while finasteride requires a prescription.
However, anyone who wants to have their hair loss treated with this drug usually has to cover the costs themselves. “The drugs are considered so-called lifestyle drugs,” says Ursula Sellerberg, herself a pharmacist and deputy spokesperson for the Federal Chamber of Pharmacists. “Insurance companies generally do not cover the costs, despite the prescription.”
According to the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), so-called lifestyle medications also include appetite suppressants, medications for smoking cessation or for erectile problems.
