New Delhi: The Center has taken a big initiative for recycling waste. Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav said on Saturday that the central government will provide financial assistance to waste recycling startups. He said that the government is focusing on saving energy and water along with banning single-use plastic. The minister said this after participating in the cleaning campaign at Juhu beach in Mumbai as part of International Coast Cleanup Day. He said that the central government will support start-up companies for waste recycling. The ministry has given guidelines for one-time financial assistance to such start-ups. Yadav said that we know how to use the products of nature but forget to recycle them. Throw garbage on beaches and roads. We will focus on saving energy and water, banning single-use plastic, preventing food waste, promoting healthy lifestyle and e-waste disposal. According to a Bloomberg report, India generates one-third more waste every day than Europe, but disposing it is a big problem. 42 million tons of garbage is generated daily in Indian cities. The central government estimates that 5 gigawatts of electricity can be generated from waste in the country, which is 30 times the current installed capacity. The biggest challenge in this is waste segregation.

Government scheme
Yadav said the government will provide one-time financial assistance for setting up plants for recycling of discarded fishing gear and plastic waste in coastal areas. According to a note prepared by the ministry, the focus is on setting up recycling facilities for fishing gear/nets and marine plastic waste at 12 ‘Blue Flag-certified’ beaches in the country. The ministry said one-time financial assistance will be provided for setting up 25 recycling plants (13 for nylon fishing gear and 12 for plastic waste) near ‘Blue Flag’ beaches. The assistance amount will include the cost of plant and machinery but will not include land, construction work or other expenses.
The subsidy for plastic waste recycling units would be Rs 19 lakh per tonne of production capacity or 40% of the plant cost with a maximum limit of Rs 38 lakh. The subsidy for nylon fishing gear recycling plant would be Rs 24 lakh per tonne of capacity or 40% of the plant cost with a maximum limit of Rs 48 lakh. The cost would be shared between the Central Pollution Control Board and the project proponent in the ratio of 40:60.

Clean-up campaign
Speaking on the occasion, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the state is blessed with a 720-km-long coastline. Keeping it clean will boost tourism. He said the economy of many countries is based on tourism. He said the cleanliness drive launched on September 17 at Girgaon Chowpatty in south Mumbai will continue till October 2.
