The two-story building, located in the town of Saviano, collapsed this morning, according to authorities. “Firefighters found a father and infant alive, and unfortunately found the bodies of two other children,” firefighters wrote on the X website.
According to local media, the girl is 4 years old and her brother is 6 years old. After hours of searching, firefighters, with the help of sniffer dogs, found the body of a woman “who has not yet been identified” among the rubble, according to fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari, who told Rai News 24 Cari.
He said, “She is a woman, and we are currently working to recover (the body) from the rubble,” emphasizing that the search operations are complicated.
Local media reported that the woman was the grandmother of the two children and that she lived on the second floor of the building. The mother is still missing, according to media reports.
More than 60 volunteers from civil defense took part in the rescue operations, according to the Campania region.
After being recovered from the rubble, the father and the infants were transferred to hospital, and the father’s condition is serious.
Pictures released by firefighters showed two large holes in the roof of the building, which had partially collapsed.
The media reported that the collapse may have been caused by a gas explosion.
