Unprecedented Snowfall Strands Drivers and Closes Roads in South Africa

by time news

Unusual extent snowfall caused significant problems today in the road network of South Africa.

The N3 national road, which connects Johannesburg with the city of Durban on the eastern coast, was one of the most affected, with many of its sections closed.

The authorities worked throughout the night to assist people trapped in their vehicles, but for now, it is unknown how many are stranded and in what condition they are.

Blankets and meals were distributed to some of the trapped drivers, announced the government of the KwaZulu-Natal province.

Trucks have been parked on the side of the road since yesterday, and “the buses operating between the provinces have been trapped at fuel stations for about 7 hours,” clarified Simone Zuane, a communications officer of the RTMC, the main agency managing road safety in the country, to AFP.

In some areas, the snow depth reached 2 meters.

New snowfall is expected, and authorities have issued warnings in various parts of the country, said a meteorologist, Lutando Masimini, to the French Press Agency, referring to “extreme phenomena.”
